What is UP Board Scrutiny? (Process Explained)
Scrutiny (Rechecking) is an administrative process designed to correct any clerical errors that may have occurred during the grading process.
Important Clarification: Applying for scrutiny does not lead to a fresh evaluation of your answers. The examiner will not read your essays again to give fresh marks. Instead, they verify:
- Whether all marks given inside the answer sheets were successfully transferred to the cover page.
- Whether the sum total of all marks is mathematically correct.
- Whether any answer sheets or questions were completely overlooked or left ungraded.
Scrutiny vs Compartment: Major Differences
| Feature | Scrutiny | Compartment |
|---|---|---|
| Core Purpose | Verifying addition and totaling accuracy of current copies. | Re-appearing for exams in the failed subjects. |
| Exam Required | No, no physical test is required. | Yes, you must write a fresh examination. |
| Eligibility | All passed or failed students are eligible. | Only students who failed in 1 or 2 subjects. |
| Marks Outcome | Marks can increase, decrease or stay identical. | Grades depend entirely on performance in the re-exam. |

Scrutiny Registration — FAQ
What is Scrutiny in the UP Board?
Scrutiny (also known as rechecking or revaluation) is a process where the board re-verifies your answer sheet. Examiners check whether all marks are correctly added up, ensure that the totaling on the front cover matches the inside pages, and verify that no questions went unchecked. It does not mean re-grading or re-evaluating the quality of your answers.
What is the application fee for Scrutiny?
The official fee is charged per subject (usually around ₹500 per subject). The fee must be deposited in the treasury through the SBI bank challan system. Check upmsp.edu.in for confirmation.
Can my marks decrease during Scrutiny?
Although extremely rare, if an error is discovered where marks were incorrectly added up in your favor initially, the board can adjust the total downwards. In most cases, marks either increase or remain unchanged.
Can I apply for Scrutiny in multiple subjects?
Yes. Students can choose to apply for as many subjects as they want, provided they pay the prescribed fee for each subject separately.
Can I apply for both Scrutiny and Compartment?
Yes. You can apply for both. If your marks increase during scrutiny and you pass the subject, you will not need to appear for the compartment exam.
When will the Scrutiny results be released?
Scrutiny results are usually declared district-wise or regional office-wise within 1 to 2 months after the form submission window closes. Results are published on upmsp.edu.in.
